KAMLOOPS – Peter du Toit, described as a leader in championing change in the IH West region, retired in January from Interior Health.
His influence as acute health services administrator for Thompson Cariboo Shuswap was deeply felt by his IH colleagues who celebrated his work with events in Kamloops and Salmon Arm. Secwepemc Nation health representatives paid special tribute to him at his retirement tea in Kamloops.
Peter called it “an extremely meaningful honour” when the Secwepemc health council blanketed him with a beautiful blanket along with a drumming song to wish him well and recognize his efforts to advance health care services for Aboriginal populations .
Peter was a member of the Secwepemc Letter of Understanding Joint Committee and supported or led various initiatives, including:
- Co-chair of Cultural Safety Taskforce in Williams Lake
- Sacred Space development Shuswap Lake General Hospital
- IH-Secwepemc Health Caucus Art Collaborative
- Advocating and ensuring IH staff within his portfolio completed cultural safety training
- Deni House Sacred Space renovation
